காந்தள் போலிய கரம்

“குந்தவை ஓலையை அவனிடம் கொடுத்தபோது காந்தள் மலரையொத்த அவளுடைய விரல்கள் வந்தியத்தேவனுடைய அதிர்ஷ்டக் கையைத் தொட்டன. அவனுடைய மெய்சிலிர்த்தது; நெஞ்சு வெடித்து விடும் போலிருந்தது. ஆயிரம் பதினாயிரம் பட்டுப்பூச்சிகள் அவன் முன்னால் இறகுகளை அடித்துக் கொண்டு பறந்தன. ஆயிரம் பதினாயிரம் குயில்கள் ஒன்றுசேர்ந்து இன்னிசை பாடின. மலை,மலையான வண்ண மலர்க் குவியல்கள் அவன் மீது விழுந்து நாலாபக்கமும் சிதறின.”

The above lines appear in chapter 49, part I of the novel Ponniyin Selvan written by the Indian novelist Kalki Krishnamoorthi.

Translation: “When Kundavai handed the letter her kaanthal like fingers touched his. His heart beat as if it would burst. A thousand ten thousand butterflies beat their wings as they took flight in front of him. Thousand ten thousand cuckoo birds joined in a chorus of songs. A potpourri of flowers showered over him scattering their petals in all four directions.”

These two chapters, 48 and 49 are among the best of Part I. What is kaanthal?

Kaanthal is flame lily; botanical name Gloriosa superba. The plant is also known in Tamil as the November-flower plant (karthikai-poo.)
